About Me

If you get around to reading this page you will discover that I have a strange background beyond the stained glass world.

Stained Glass and Glass crafts

Started learning stained glass at the Piotr Frac studio/ workshop at the Crypt of St John Bethnal Green in East London.

Quietly studying the transformative craft of glazing and painting here and exhibiting at the Mile End Arts Pavilion.  I continue experimenting with various glass techniques including fusing.

City and Guilds of London Art School - Verre eglomisé with Rian Kanduth and Glass as an Artists Medium with Pippa Beveridge.

Heraldry

Reigate College of Art – Heraldry with Gerald Mynott.

Traditional Arts and Crafts

Prince’s School of Traditional Art:

Gilding techniques with Helen White and Christabel Helena Andersen

Icon painting with Hanna Ward

Egg tempera techniques and gilding with David Cranswick and Lily Gale

Wood Inlay with Joachim Tantau

Marquetry with Nooshin Shafei

Geometry classes including with Tom Bree

Painting the Cosmos with Annalis Solis

Needlework

Working slowly on the Certificate & Diploma at the Royal School of Needlework. As this list suggests, I believe other arts and crafts can influence my glass practice.

History of Art

MA in History of Art from Birkbeck College, University of London.

Theatre

BA in Theatre, Film and Television at University of Bristol.

Art

Chelsea College of Art ‘Art, University of Arts, London Foundation’ course. A  year of wonderful artistic experimentation!

Other

To keep my work relevant to the world around us I continue to work as a family mediator.

Before discovering stained glass I have also been...

... a dogsbody in the City of London for 7 years

... a counsellor at Childline for 12 years

... a news editor for ITN at ITV News London.

I still podcast about unusual sites in London including a huge series on the City of London Churches and the stained glass contained within them.

I ocassionally take people on tours around London sites. I am a fully qualified and accredited London and the South East Blue Badge Guide, Westminster Guide and City of London Guide.

This 'other' background means I am aware of the historical, cultural, architectural, and current social issues in and around me. All this informs my approach to stained glass. I am inherently interested in people and their lives.  Visually I am forever observing the environment around me for inspiration and undersatnding of our world. I aim to encourage people to look at and think beyond the beautiful and the surface.
